Day 11 - Our 45th Anniversary at the Western Brook Pond

Driven today 208 km
Total driven: 3519 km

Today is our 45th anniversary and we celebrated with a hike to the Western Brook Pond in the Gros Morne National Park.  The Brook Pond was created by a glacier cutting a U-shaped valley by ice segregation and abrasion of the surrounding bedrock.

There is  a 3 km hike to the pond, crossing a bog and walking by a large pond.  The vegetation is sub-artic,  There a lot of places like this in northern Canada

It was pretty windy and some of the trees are very deformed by this winds.

This one of the deformed trees

There is a boardwalk over the bog.  The bog is around 4 metres deep

We saw this bird and it actually posed for me.  This guy was not afraid of people

And then we got in the boat

The trip up the pond takes 2 hours.  The pictures cannot describe how majestic is this fjord.

After the pond we drove a few more kilometres to Broom Point.  There is an exhibit on fishing.  There is a cabin that was used by a family of three brothers, their wives and kids during fishing season.  In the walk to the sea we saw another bird.

There are fishing nets

Lobster traps

The shore is very rugged

We ended our day with dinner at the pizza place.  For desert Brenda had a double chocolate cake and I had hot apple crumble with ice cream,

Tomorrow we go to St. John's
